Australia credit card gambling ban passes lower house

Australian gamblers will soon be banned from using credit cards to place bets online, after gambling reform measures passed the House of Representatives.

The new laws would extend the ban of credit cards for betting to include websites and gambling apps.

Credit cards had previously been banned for betting purposes at physical gambling locations such as casinos.

The new laws were passed by the lower house of federal parliament on Tuesday with the support of both major parties.

Attempts to amend the gambling changes by the opposition and crossbenchers were unsuccessful.

Banks and betting companies will be given a six-month transitional period to implement the changes
