Paddy Power pays out early on Mayweather-McGregor match
It’s the most lucrative fight in boxing history, and some punters are already in the money, as Paddy Power Sportsbook has paid out early on Floyd Mayweather beating Conor McGregor.
The Irish bookmaker made the $320,000 payout this morning, despite more than 80% of its customers backing McGregor.
A spokesman for Paddy Power said, “We’re spinning the roulette wheel a bit here, as getting it wrong would see a serious Mac Attack on my bank balance.
“But, when you’re backing Mayweather, you’ve basically covered the whole board anyway.
“Patriotism aside, we are paying out early on a Mayweather victory because we checked, and only one of them is a boxer.”
Such is the interest in the bout, Paddy Power says that it is easily the biggest boxing betting market of all time, predicting more than $250 million in bets, with most of the money expected to come in the 36 hours before the bout.
It is more than three times the size of the next biggest fight, when Mayweather fought Manny Pacquiao in 2015, and by far the bookie’s biggest event of the year.
Despite the vast skill and experience advantage Mayweather holds over first-time boxer McGregor, the bookie makes him a generous 1/4 to win the bout, and the early payout means money for everyone who backed him in the outright market.
The market had opened with Mayweather at 1/20, but punters have lumped on McGregor, meaning the odds have shortened dramatically as the fight approaches, tumbling to 10/3.
