Man Utd Star Zlatan Ibrahimovic pulls out of BetHard UK launch

Business News

The Zlatan Ibrahimovic-fronted launch of a new betting company was postponed on Wednesday after it emerged his appearance could contravene a ban on players promoting gambling in football.

Manchester United striker Ibrahimovic had been lined up as the face of BetHard ahead of a press conference on Monday, despite Football Association rules prohibiting such activity in relation to the game.

But hours after the FA was alerted to the potential rule breach, organisers of the launch announced it had been postponed.

Participants in English football are banned from betting on the game worldwide, with FA regulations also stipulating: “An individual participant, when acting in a personal capacity, shall not be permitted to advertise or promote any betting activity that the participant is prohibited from engaging in.”

A day after sending out invitations to the launch, organisers announced the postponement, adding: “We will be in touch with a new date soon, and please bear with us until then as we are unable to offer further information at this time.”

Swedish star Ibrahimovic has not featured for United since Boxing Day following a setback in his return from the serious knee injury he suffered in April.
