Richard Flint named Glassdoor’s top UK CEO

Business News

Richard Flint was just crowned the highest-rated chief executive in the UK for his leadership at Sky Betting & Gaming, an online gambling firm based in Leeds. Flint topped the 2018 Employees’ Choice Awards for the top CEOs by Glassdoor, one of the world’s largest job sites.

Having led his 1,200-employee company for nearly 20 years, Flint shared with Quartz what it takes to be a good boss.

“The biggest misconception is that as a boss and leader you have to have all the answers and be ‘the smartest person in the room’ on any particular topic. You can’t be, and if you try to be then you won’t get the best out of your team and people, and this is really the most important thing,” said Flint, who initially considered a career in politics.

Flint added that while there are many ways to lead, he prefers to foster a “supportive and collaborative” environment—something that requires “empathy, humility, and honesty.”

He believes that the best leadership comes from understanding personal limitations, ensuring your team runs smoothly, and having a depth of emotional intelligence.

Sky Betting staff remarked in their reviews that the senior management team, as well as Flint, “always have time for employees regardless of the hierarchy,” and that they are “very clear about how the business is doing.”

In determining the annual award, Glassdoor looks at company reviews and ratings from current and former employees posted over a 12-month period. To qualify, companies need at least 1,000 employees and, on Glassdoor, 35 company reviews and 35 ratings for the CEO and senior management. A 3.0 rating (on a 5-point scale) is required for the CEO, company, and senior management. The quality of the reviews are also taken into consideration. The information is put into a Glassdoor algorithm to generate the list.
