Svenska Spel cancels dividend and furloughs staff

Business News

Svenska Spel has implemented measures due to the corona virus’s effects on parts of the group.

The measures include short-term work within Svenska Spel Sport & Casino AB, where canceled games and sporting events have had a major impact on the range of sports games.

They also include notifications within Casino Cosmopol AB and CC Casino Restaurang AB, due to a dramatic reduction in the number of guests in recent weeks and that Casino Cosmopol temporarily closed all four casinos as of March 29 as a result of the ban on meetings with more than 50 people. As the corona virus consequences are difficult to see, Svenska Spel’s Board of Directors has decided to withdraw its proposal for a dividend.

Short-term work at Svenska Spel Sport & Casino AB affects about 45 out of a total of about 135 employees. Alerts within Casino Cosmopol AB and CC Casino Restaurang AB affect just over 800 of a total of almost 900 employees. The notification concerns all four casinos in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö and Sundsvall and the head office. At the same time as notification is being made, preparations are underway for negotiation with the trade unions on short-term work.

We are implementing the measures to adapt the business to the current situation, and we do so with the utmost care of our employees.

Our hope is to be able to quickly switch to full operations and staffing when the situation turns. But right now we do not know how it will develop in the future, or how long it will last, and therefore it is necessary that we take steps to ensure a sustainable business, ”says Patrik Hofbauer, President and CEO Svenska Spel.

It is currently difficult to get an overview of the corona virus’s long-term effects on Svenska Spel’s operations, especially in sports games and games at land-based casinos. Against this background, Svenska Spel’s Board of Directors, in consultation with the owner, has decided to withdraw its proposal for a dividend of SEK 850 million.
