Sportsbet forced to refund customer despite being on ‘self-exclusion’ list
A man who gambled almost $150,000 with Sportsbet has received a full refund of all his losses, because the online bookmaker ignored his wishes to be ignored.
The man, known only as Mr A, was awarded $93,082.04 by the Northern Territory Racing Commission last week, after it found Sportsbet had not complied with the conditions of its licence.
Mr A spent many years dealing with his gambling addiction, Lauren Levin, the director of Policy and Campaigns for Financial Counselling Australia in Melbourne.
“Like a lot people with a gambling addiction, it was out of control,” Levin said.“He had lost a lot of money, he had become very depressed and it was going to break up his family.”
Mr A’s brother finally came to his rescue and got him into an addiction treatment program.
