Record month in Illinois as sports betting wagers hit $634m

Illinois set monthly records in both sports betting revenue and handle for the month of March according to figures released by the state’s Racing and Gaming Commission.

Illinois reached its highest monthly handle of all time, with about $634 million, and was just about $7 million short of overtaking longtime gambling juggernaut Nevada for the No. 2 spot.

“The jump kind of went in line with the numbers we saw from across the country and other states with legalized gambling,” Sports betting analyst Bryce Derouin said.

Of the $634 million wagered, about $366 million was bet on basketball because of the NCAA tournament.

Believe it or not, Derouin said that number could have been much higher if Illinoisans had the ability to bet on in-state college teams, which they currently do not.

“With Illinois having a ban on in-state schools, the revenue has just gone to other places instead of staying within the state,” Derouin said.
