Bet365 pays DKK4.7m penalty for breach of athletes media rights
Hillside (New Media Malta) Plc T/A Bet365 must pay compensation to 23 Danish athletes, including soccer star Christian Eriksen, for using their names and photos on social media without consent, Denmark’s maritime and commercial court ruled on Monday.
The background of the case and the parties’ claims that Hillside (New Media Malta) Plc has used photos of and names of a number of elite athletes on their Facebook and Twitter profiles without the consent of the elite athletes.
The defendant, Hillside (New Media Malta) Plc (Bet365) has filed a motion for acquittal against the plaintiffs’ claims, alternatively against payment of a small amount determined by the court. Bet365 was ordered to pay 4.7 million Danish crowns ($697,000) to the athletes.
