London Mayor urged to honour pledge and ban gambling adverts from TFL

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan pledged to get rid of gambling adverts on the TfL network in his manifesto last year.

The mayor promised the ban in his 2023 election manifesto, “given the devastating way gambling addiction can destroy lives and families”, but no such measure has yet been introduced.

Khan’s manifesto aimed to bar advertisements deemed “harmful”, rather than impose a blanket ban, although it remains unclear how the term would be defined. Now gambling campaigners have said Mr Khan needs to urgently move forward with his ad ban.

Former Tory party leader Iain Duncan Smith said: ‘The idea he should have those (ads) all over TfL, encouraging young people to take up gambling, is awful, and he needs to end it now. This is hypocrisy.’
