Swedish regulator fines Yggdrasil SEK300,000

Regulation

The Swedish Gaming Authority believes that Yggdrasil Gaming Limited has provided gaming software to an operator who lacks the necessary Swedish license and the company receives a warning and penalty fee of SEK300,000.

As of July 1, 2023, a license is required to handle gambling software according to the Gambling Act. The license requirement applies to actors who manufacture, provide, install and/or modify gaming software used in commercial online gambling.

The purpose of the requirement is to increase channeling and thereby discourage illegal gambling. Unlicensed game operators must not be able to use suppliers who manufacture, provide, install and/or change game software for game operators who have a license in Sweden.

The Swedish Gaming Authority has checked a number of websites that are operated by operators who lack the necessary Swedish gaming license and who are prohibited from operating games in Sweden. The Gaming Authority was then able to establish that Yggdrasil Gaming Limited was a game supplier to an operator that lacks the necessary Swedish license and began an inspection of the company.
