Svenska Spel revenue drops 9% in third quarter of 2024

Finance News

During the third quarter, Svenska Spel’s customer base continues to grow and the share of healthy revenues to develop positively.

The Tur business area has another good quarter with growing revenues. The group’s results are, however, weighed down by lower income in other business areas and increased gambling tax. Lower costs within the group as a whole contribute to an operating margin on par with the previous year. This is evident from Svenska Spel’s interim report for the third quarter of 2024, which is presented today.

The percentage of healthy income continues to increase to 94 percent during the third quarter. The reason is that our concern for customers with a focus on sustainable gaming is effective. But it also affects the group’s income negatively, and it will continue to do so as we plan for more measures going forward. It is a conscious priority because we want sustainable growth – a balance between growth and responsibility, says Anna Johnson, president and CEO of Svenska Spel.

The group’s net gaming revenue for the quarter is SEK 1,784 million (1,965), a decrease of 9 percent compared to the same quarter last year. This is mainly due to the Casino Cosmopol business area decreasing by SEK 100 million, 76 percent, as only one casino was open compared to three casinos in the same quarter last year.

The net gaming revenue for the Sport & Casino business area decreases by 12 percent compared to the same quarter last year. This is primarily due to the negative impact of the gambling responsibility measures that have been introduced, but which have the intended positive effect on healthy revenues. The same applies to the Vegas business area, which reduces net gaming revenue by 26 percent. Vega’s business partners also continue to face a challenging market situation.

The Tur business area has yet another good quarter, with net gaming revenue increasing by 1 percent compared to the corresponding quarter last year. Eurojackpot continues to be the game that drives growth and Triss also has a positive development.

The group’s operating profit of SEK 627 million (686) is a decrease of 9 percent. This is due to lower revenues for three out of four business areas as well as increased gaming tax from July 1, which negatively affects the quarter’s results by SEK 70 million. At the same time, previous measures to reduce costs continue to have a positive effect, and contribute to a maintained operating margin of 35 percent (35).

The group’s online business continues to increase. This quarter by 2 percent compared to the same quarter last year, and online accounts for 59 percent (53) of the group’s revenue during the quarter.

Among the quarter’s product news, Triss has launched the new promotional lottery, Stjärnvinsten, where customers can scratch three stars and win the entire scratch field. The European Champion competition has started for the second year in a row – a competition from the European tip that is decided over six rounds with participants both individually and in teams.

During the quarter, Svenska Spel distributed 55 million winnings in number games and lotteries with a total value of more than SEK 444 million. The quarter’s highest profit was just over SEK 250 million when the jackpot on Eurojackpot fell out. The sports and casino games delivered eight million wins during the quarter, of which the highest was SEK 10 million at Stryktipset.
