New York sports betting revenue leads the way

Since online sports betting was legalized in January 2022, New York has cemented its status in the betting industry with consistent growth and record-breaking achievements. In 2024, the Empire State made history by generating $22.5 billion in online sports betting revenue. 

2024 marked a historic milestone for online sports betting in New York.  the New York sports betting economy in 2024 alone, an 18% increase over 2023 to yield $2.11 billion in operator revenue (+24%) and more than $1 billion in state taxes. It is now, for all intents and purposes, twice as large as any other market in the country.

Over one third of all sports betting tax revenue in the country comes from the Empire State via its draconian 51% rate on gross revenue.

Data also reveals that the total betting handle for November reached $2.27 billion, the second-highest monthly total on record since state legalization. November’s results further solidify New York’s position as a powerhouse in the online sports betting industry.  

The momentum of New York’s online sports betting scene was already evident in October when the state achieved its highest-ever monthly handle of $2.32 billion. This broke the previous record of $2.11 billion from November 2023, making October a landmark month in the state’s sports betting history. So far, no other state has ever surpassed a $2 billion handle in a single month, highlighting how betting in New York dominates the market.
