The Coates family are the third biggest taxpayers in the UK, latest figures show. An eye-watering tax bill of £265m means Denise, John and Peter Coates – the family behind Etruria-based bet365 – are once again the top taxpayers in the Midlands.

The Stoke City FC owners were among 100 wealthy individuals or families revealed in the Sunday Times Tax List 2025 were liable for a total of £4.985 billion of UK tax last year – seven per cent less than the previous 12 months. The Coates family were only stopped from taking top spot by billionaire hedge fund manager Sir Chris Hohn as well as brothers and Betfred founders Fred and Peter Done and family.

They forked out £339.5m and £273.4m in tax respectively. According to the seventh edition of the Tax List, released as millions of people race to meet the self-assessment deadline at the end of the month, the Coates family had the biggest tax bill in the Midlands, ahead of Walsall-born high street tycoon Mike Ashley, JCB chairman Lord Bamford, Swadlincote billionaire housebuilder John Bloor, and Dunelm founder Sir Will Adderley and family from Rutland, who all made the UK top 20.
