Svenska Spel reports flat revenue and profit
Svenska Spel is ending the year on a strong note. During the fourth quarter, the positive development for the Luck business area continues with the highest growth ever, and within the Sport & Casino business area, the number of gambling customers is increasing.
At the same time, the proportion of healthy revenues is at a high and stable level, which shows that the increased focus on sustainable gaming is having the intended positive effect.
It is a statement of strength that the year ends with a quarter with revenues in line with the previous year and improved operating profit linked to lower operating costs. This despite the fact that 2024 was a year of major restructuring by Svenska Spel and a weak economy in Sweden, says Anna Johnson, President and CEO of Svenska Spel.
The financial result for the full year is affected by both the work to increase sustainable gaming, as well as one-off costs for the reorganization of Svenska Spel and the closure of two casinos. However, excluding one-off costs, both operating profit and operating margin were higher than the previous year, and exceeded the financial targets.
This shows that we are well equipped for the investments we need to make going forward. I am also pleased that the board is proposing a dividend of SEK 1.6 billion to the owner. Giving back to society is an important part of Svenska Spel’s purpose. As Sweden’s entire gaming company, we give back by donating our entire surplus to the treasury. This is money that benefits society, in addition to our sponsorship of Swedish sports and our support for research into problem gambling, says Anna Johnson.
The Group’s net gaming revenue for the fourth quarter is SEK 2,125 million (2,121), which is on par with the same quarter last year. This is despite challenging comparative figures for the land-based casino and slot machine business areas. Strengthened measures within responsible gaming also have a negative impact on the Group’s revenue, although they have the intended positive effect on the proportion of healthy revenue.
The Luck business area has another positive quarter, with net gaming revenue increasing by 7 percent, and with growth for both number games and lotteries. This is largely driven by the growth engine Eurojackpot, but also Triss, which has continued to develop well. The full year 2024 was also a record year for the Tur business area with a total of more than SEK 5 billion in net gaming revenue and growth for four consecutive quarters.
For the Sport & Casino and Vegas business areas, revenue continues to be negatively affected by strengthened responsible gaming measures compared to the same quarter last year. Net gaming revenue for the Sport & Casino business area is still on par with last year. This is thanks to a strong end to the year where several factors contributed. First, the celebration of Stryktipset’s 90th anniversary, which engaged both new and existing customers, and secondly, the new betting platform, which resulted in a clear increase in the number of gaming customers. Net gaming revenue for the Vegas business area, however, decreased by 24 percent. In addition to strengthened responsible gaming, revenue is also negatively affected by the challenging economic situation for business partners.
The Casino Cosmopol business area is primarily affected by only one casino being open during the quarter, compared to three casinos in the same quarter last year. Net gaming revenue decreased by 66 percent.
The Group’s operating profit of SEK 535 million (485) is an increase of 10 percent compared to the same quarter last year. Lower operating costs contribute to the operating margin increasing to 25 percent (23). The Group’s online business continues to grow, this quarter by 12 percent compared to the same quarter last year, and accounts for 59 percent (52) of the Group’s revenue during the quarter.
Among the product news of the quarter is “Triss home in the mailbox”, a new subscription service that increases customers’ flexibility. With it, customers can digitally order different types of Trisslots for home delivery. It is now also possible to correct physical Trisslots digitally with their mobile phone. In addition to celebrating Stryktipset’s 90th anniversary with a record in turnover and number of playing customers, the Poker-SM has been held in twelve disciplines.
During the quarter, Svenska Spel awarded 95 million-sek prizes in number games and lotteries with a total value of just over SEK 210 million. The highest win of the quarter was SEK 22 million on Eurojackpot. The sports and casino games have delivered 25 million wins during the quarter, of which 17 on Stryktipset, seven on Europatipset and one on Måltipset.
In this year’s Gräsroten, customers chose to support 8,725 clubs in 75 sports. They were able to share in SEK 35 million, which contributes to supporting youth sports and club life. This is an important part of Svenska Spel’s work for an inclusive and equal sports movement. In sports sponsorship, Svenska Spel has also extended its agreement with the Swedish Ice Hockey Association until 2027.
