Denise Coates and family rise up rich list as fortune increases to £9.44 billion
The UK’s richest people in 2025 have been revealed as many of the country’s wealthiest billionaires remain in place despite a changing landscape.
The Coates family are now worth an eye-watering £9.44 billion according to the 2025 edition of The Sunday Times Rich List, published today. The bet365 and Stoke City owners saw their wealth soar by £1.9 billion in the last year.
It wasn’t quite enough to reclaim top spot in the West Midlands, with Staffordshire business tycoon Lord Bamford retaining his position as the richest person in the region following a whopping £1.8 billion rise in his wealth over the last 12 months. The JCB chairman and his family are now worth £9.45 billion, up from £7.65 billion last year.
Nationally, the Coates family – comprising Denise, John and dad Peter Coates – came 16th in the overall rich list. Last month, we reported that Stoke-on-Trent gambling giant bet365 donated a whopping £120m to the Denise Coates Foundation during the last financial year – taking the charity’s total funds to nearly £1bn.
The figures were revealed in the latest accounts published on Companies House for the Etruria-based firm and the foundation. Bet365’s accounts reveal that its latest annual donation to the Denise Coates Foundation in the year to March 31, 2024 was up by £20m on the previous 12 months. With interest and investment returns of £13.3m, the charity’s total incoming resources was £133m for the year, compared to £108m for 2022/23.
