Norway’s regulator launches investigation into Norsk Tipping following underage gambling
Norsk Tipping has been notified of minors who are breaking the regulations and spending money on games. Now the Norwegian Lottery Authority is asking for answers.
There is an 18-year age limit to open an account and play at Norsk Tipping. Nevertheless, money is been transferred from the bank card to minors, and to the gaming accounts of adults.
The adults are, by all accounts, lending out their gaming accounts to Norwegian youth.
Various banks have notified Norsk Tipping of such money transfers 21 times since January 2024. In addition, the Norwegian Lottery Authority has received similar tips.
In one of the cases, a minor, according to department director Tore Bell, is said to have deposited over 100,000 kroner divided into several transfers. There will probably always be individual cases where adults lend out their gaming accounts to minors.
Two weeks ago, the Norwegian Gambling Authority sent a letter with nine specific questions to Norsk Tipping. The response came a week later. The gaming company writes in it that the owners of Norwegian bank cards are anonymous.
“Norsk Tipping is not legally entitled to exempt banks from their duty of confidentiality, and therefore does not have the opportunity to stop deposits from minors,” the letter states.
CEO Tonje Sagstuen emphasizes that Norsk Tipping does not have registered customers under the age of 18, and that it is not legal for minors to play.
