Norwegian Lottery Authority announces a full review of Norsk Tipping

Norsk Tipping broke the law when thousands were notified of excessive prizes, the Norwegian Gambling Authority reports. They announce a full review of Lotto, Eurojackpot and Vikinglotto.

The Norwegian Gambling Authority concludes that the error is a violation of the Gambling Act.

Gambling should be conducted in a fair manner that is suitable for winning the public’s trust. We believe that this has been violated, says senior advisor Anya Therese Markhus at the Norwegian Gambling Authority to NRK.

We are not surprised by the Norwegian Gambling Authority’s assessment. Norsk Tipping also believes that this is a very serious error, says Vegar Strand, acting CEO of Norsk Tipping in an email.

A woman standing on a bridge I sincerely believe that Norsk Tipping is now working quite hard to restore that trust. They must do this by showing that they are addressing and cleaning up the errors, and avoiding similar errors from occurring, says Anya Therese Markhus at the Norwegian Gambling Authority.

There were 47,000 Norwegian winners, and around 30,000 of them received an SMS or push notification about incorrect winnings. The reason was an error in the code that converted to Norwegian kroner.

People should be able to trust Norsk Tipping’s games, says senior advisor Anya Therese Markhus at the Lotteritsilsynet. The fact that several thousand players receive a notification of excessively high winnings is clearly harmful to trust, Markhus tells NTB.

The Lottery Authority is now opening a larger supervision of Norsk Tipping, Markhus says. The supervision includes Lotto, Vikinglotto and Eurojackpot.

They will look at the entire time span, from the deadline for submitting bets until the payout has occurred. In the first instance, they will request documentation and review it.

There will then be interviews with key employees at Norsk Tipping throughout the autumn. The Lottery Authority will also be present during the draws for these gambling games, Markhus tells NRK.
