Ex-Premier League player hit with suspension for breaching betting rules

LEGAL

An independent Regulatory Commission has given Neil Danns a six-month suspension, which is suspended until the conclusion of the 2025-26 season, and a £1,000 fine for breaches of The FA’s betting rules.

It was alleged that the now Southport FC manager breached FA Rule E8 65 times by placing bets on football matches between 17 February 2007 and 13 August 2022 while he was a participant at various other clubs.

During that period, Danns featured for a handful of sides including Leicester City, Birmingham City and Crystal Palace.

FA rules drawn up in 2014 state that any player representing a club in the top eight tiers of English football is banned from betting on any aspect of the sport worldwide.

Danns’ involvement came mainly through accumulators with some selections involving his own team.

One included his side losing and three featured selections centred on his team winning.

A Football Association Regulatory Commission report described Danns’ bets as ‘modest stakes on a ‘Saturday accumulator’ on a reasonably widespread number of games.’
