NBA investigating Beasley gambling allegations
The NBA has opened its own investigation into free agent Malik Beasley’s gambling allegations stemming from the Department of Justice’s investigation into players gambling, the league confirmed to The Athletic on Wednesday.
The investigation started this summer, per a league source, but it is unclear when the investigation is expected to conclude. ESPN was first to report the news.
Beasley is no longer a target of the federal gambling investigation, per his lawyer Steve Haney. The NBA, however, is now launching its own investigation into Beasley’s involvement.
Haney confirmed to The Athletic on Aug. 22 that a lawyer from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York informed him of Beasley’s status within the federal case. Haney did not say whether the federal investigation being conducted was related to the Eastern District’s investigation into the Jontay Porter betting scheme and allegations against Terry Rozier.
The office launched an investigation into Beasley earlier this year. Both the NBA and the Detroit Pistons, for whom Beasley played last season, were notified of it just days before the start of free agency in June. Detroit subsequently retracted a three-year, $42 million contract offer to Beasley.
The NBA’s findings are not yet known as the league’s investigation is currently underway.
