Denmark bans TV adverts for gambling during sports events

Regulation

The Danish Parliament has reached a new agreement to address gambling addiction and protect young people from exposure to betting.

The deal introduces a “whistle-to-whistle” ban on gambling advertisements during live sports broadcasts. This means that commercials for betting and other gambling services will be prohibited on TV and streaming platforms from ten minutes before a game begins until ten minutes after it ends.

Minister of Taxation Ane Halsboe-Jørgensen announced the agreement at a press conference Friday morning, calling it a “significant step toward reducing harmful gambling habits and protecting vulnerable groups.”

The move comes after years of political discussions and growing public concern over the rise in gambling advertising. Studies show that the number of gambling ads on Danish TV has increased by 70 percent since 2020, while nearly half a million adults are estimated to have some degree of gambling problem.

The new rules are expected to take effect next year.
