Indiana signs sweepstakes ban

Legislation

Indiana has recently implemented a comprehensive regulatory framework that significantly changes the landscape for sweepstakes-style online gaming in the state.

On March 12, 2026, Governor Mike Braun officially enacted House Bill 1052, introducing new limitations on various digital gaming products commonly associated with social-casino platforms. This legislative measure received approval from state lawmakers earlier in the session, as documented by the Indiana General Assembly.

The majority of its provisions are set to come into effect on July 1, 2026. In addition to modifying alcohol licensing and administrative gambling regulations, the law lays out specific penalties related to online sweepstakes gaming activities. The primary focus of the legislation is on internet-based sweepstakes games that mimic traditional casino experiences.

Under this new statute, a “sweepstakes game” is defined as any digital game played on devices such as smartphones or computers that operates with a dual- or multi-currency system. In these systems, players can exchange virtual currency for cash prizes or entries that may lead to cash-equivalent rewards. Lawmakers have crafted this definition to be broad, ensuring it encompasses online games designed to replicate popular gambling formats.

The law specifically mentions products that resemble slots, poker, bingo, table games, lottery-style games, and even sports betting experiences using sweepstakes mechanics.

With the authority granted by HB 1052, the Indiana Gaming Commission is now empowered to impose significant financial penalties. Regulators have the ability to impose civil fines of up to $100,000 on operators or individuals who knowingly engage in such gaming activities within Indiana or handle transactions involving players based in the state.
