Lawmakers block effort to legalise sports betting in Oklahoma
State lawmakers have once again hit pause on a move to make sports betting legal in Oklahoma.
The proposal, House Bill 1047, failed in the state Senate with 27 votes against and 21 votes in favor.
The vote came one day after two lawmakers — Ponca City Republicans Sen. Bill Coleman and Rep. Ken Luttrell —announced they had worked out terms of a sports betting deal between the Oklahoma City Thunder, a number of tribal nations and the state’s leading public universities.
But their proposal ran into opposition from the Senate’s ultra-conservative members, as well as some Democrats and mainstream Republicans. Gov. Kevin Stitt’s office had signaled that he wouldn’t support the bill.
Following the failure of the bill on Wednesday, April 22, Coleman made a motion to reconsider the vote at a later time. Coleman declined to comment on the efforts.
