Sports Betting

Iowa sportsbooks had a remarkable showing in April 2026, recording $210.5 million in wagers. This led to an impressive $21.9 million in sports betting revenue, alongside approximately $1.48 million in tax revenue.

While the total betting handle remained steady compared to previous years, sportsbooks saw improved betting margins, resulting in the highest monthly revenue for April in Iowa since at least 2024.

The data underscores the significant role of mobile wagering in the state, with online sportsbooks contributing over $201 million to the total handle for the month. Interestingly, the standout story in Iowa’s April numbers goes beyond the volume of bets; it reflects sportsbook efficiency.

Throughout the last three Aprils, total handle has shown remarkable consistency. In April 2024, bettors engaged in about $209.5 million, with $215.6 million in April 2025, and maintaining $210.5 million in April 2026. In essence, betting activity has stabilized. Conversely, revenue has moved in a significant upward direction.

In April 2024, sportsbooks generated $16.5 million, followed by $18.8 million in April 2025, and an impressive $21.9 million in April 2026. This marks nearly 32% revenue growth over a two-year span, despite the handle showing little variation.
