NFL wants to tighten prediction market rules

Prediction Markets

The National Football League is urging Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chair Michael Selig to take action on sports prediction markets, contending that the agency’s proposed regulations on event contracts do not adequately safeguard the integrity of its games or protect consumers.

This issue is outlined in a letter dated July 27, which has been shared by The Closing Line, a newsletter focused on prediction markets. In the letter, the NFL expresses its strong commitment to maintaining the integrity of its games as its foremost concern.

A portion of the letter states, “The NFL’s highest priority is preserving the integrity of our games. We believe that this integrity is crucial also to the stable and orderly administration of event contracts that trade on or in connection with our games and to the protection of traders in such contracts.

While the Proposed Prediction Market Rulemaking contains several productive proposals, it must be strengthened in key areas.” In contrast to the NHL and Major League Baseball. which have embraced collaborations with platforms like Kalshi and Polymarkek, the NFL is advocating for more stringent oversight of prediction markets. Earlier this year, in March, the league contacted leading platforms Kalshi and Polymarket, requesting a reduction in their range of contract offerings.
