Massachusetts reports sports wagers of $612 million
Massachusetts bettors wagered $612,062,636 in June 2026, a record for the month and 15.4% more than a year earlier, and sportsbooks kept $54,319,673 at a 9.08% hold.
In a month when the World Cup crushed margins across the country, that hold was a genuine bright spot: New York held 5.19%, Kansas 3.90%, and Pennsylvania saw its revenue more than halve. Massachusetts held nearly double those figures.
Yet the state still collected less than it did a year ago, $10,829,106 against $12,386,337 in June 2025, because its flat 20% tax applied to a smaller pot of revenue. A good month by the standards of the summer was still a down month for the treasury. Figures come from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.
Every state felt the World Cup in June, but not equally. The tournament’s group stage sends short-priced favorites against overmatched sides, casual money floods onto the chalk, and when the favorites win, the books pay out in waves. That mechanism dragged holds to historic lows almost everywhere.
Massachusetts mostly withstood it. A 9.08% hold is below the state’s own 11.91% from last June, but it sits in a different universe from the mid-single-digit disasters elsewhere.
