The PGA Tour has announced that a PGA Tour Champions member has been suspended for violating the tour’s integrity program by placing bets on golf.

Matt Gogel, who won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in 2002, is facing a six-month ban for betting on PGA Tour competition and will be eligible to return in February 2027.

The PGA Tour confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that Gogel, 55, did not bet on tournaments in which he was a participant.

In a statement of his own, the American wrote: “In 2024 and 2025, I unknowingly violated the PGA Tour policy by placing small recreational wagers on golf. I want to be clear that these wagers were not placed on regular PGA Tour events, PGA Tour Champions events or any tournament in which I participated.

“I would never knowingly violate the integrity of the game of golf. I made an honest mistake, and I look forward to playing in 2027 on the PGA Tour Champions.”

Despite golfers being known to compete in money matches and make wagers during practice rounds, the Tour’s program prohibits “betting, facilitating or soliciting betting, directly or indirectly, on any aspect of any Professional Golf Event.”
