betr on track to meet full-year guidance following strong first-quarter performance

betr Entertainment Limited reported strong turnover growth in Q1 FY27, with turnover rising 19.1% to AUD 432.3 million.

However, margin pressures from favorable customer-oriented sporting outcomes hindered net win growth and resulted in negative operating cash flow. The company indicated that trading in October saw a significant rebound, with turnover increasing by around 7% and net win surging 73%.

Despite this positive trend, its share price remained steady, sitting near the lower end of its 52-week range. In Q1, betr made substantial investments to gear up for the upcoming spring racing season and major football finals. Despite this heavy investment, the business achieved strong turnover growth and continued to gain market share in a flat-to-low-growth wagering landscape.

Management noted that their performance “significantly outstripped the market,” attributed to product innovation and improved control over promotional expenditures.

They also emphasized a strategic focus on attracting higher-value customers, indicating a willingness to lose some lower-value users who don’t contribute significantly to net win. Nonetheless, the quarter faced challenges, particularly due to customer-friendly outcomes during events like the World Cup and AFL and NRL finals, which decreased the gross win margin by approximately 1.8 percentage points.

This trend pushed the net win margin below the company’s typical range, impacting cash flow. Chief Executive Andrew Menz highlighted the importance of their product, Wildcards, as a competitive advantage. “Wildcards is a revolutionary product that was built for and resonates strongly with our target audience of sports Same Game Multi and recreational racing punters,” he stated. Menz also reinforced the company’s commitment to prioritizing customer quality over sheer volume. “We’ve made a conscious decision to let some of those more transient customers, who are hard to generate meaningful Net Win from, move on,” he explained.

Chief Operating Officer Bill Richmond reassured that the margin challenges faced in Q1 are temporary. “Regarding our Net Win margin, we budget across the year. It’s a 12-month figure,” he remarked, affirming the company’s solid history of achieving a mid-10% margin.
