Gov. DeWine seeks to have prop bets removed from list of legal bets in Ohio
Prop betting has become a popular way to wager, but it’s being threatened by Governor Mike DeWine.
In a statement DeWine said, “The evidence that prop betting is harming athletics in Ohio is reaching critical mass. First, there were threats on Ohio athletes, and now two high-profile Ohio professional athletes have been suspended by Major League Baseball as part of a ‘sports betting investigation.’ The harm to athletes and the integrity of the game is clear, and the benefits are not worth the harm.”
He’s calling on the Ohio Casino Control Commission to correct this problem and remove all prop bets from the state marketplace.
But experts says this could prove harmful to the industry. “I don’t know exactly the percentage of betting that happens just on player props or on props altogether it would be, I would have to say more than I think it was 1.35 percent the casino control commission found for just college player props,” Geoff Zochodne, Senior News Analyst at Covers.com said. “If we’re talking like NFL player props that’s a big chunk of action for these sports books,” he said.
Local sports betters disagree with DeWine’s stance.
“It’s part of the appeal is prop bets to a lot of people so I think DeWine doesn’t know what he’s talking about, you know, he should stick to what he’s good at,” Ken Zitello of Poland said.
“I disagree with him, I mean it is what it is,” Ralph Cmisko of Boardman said. ” What’s his point to tell us what to do with our money,” he asked.
Other citizens say there should be a way to limit prop betting as opposed to getting rid of it altogether.
“You can make a lot of money doing prop bets, you know I’ve made a good amount doing Fan Duel,” Austin Heider of Youngstown said. “But then again the whole thing where the player can get in on it is something I’ve thought about as well in the past so I don’t know, maybe restrict it in some way,” he said.
DeWine also announced he’ll be asking the commissioners and players unions of the six major sports leagues in the United States – MLB, the National Football League, the National Basketball Association, the Women’s National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League, and Major League Soccer – to support this effort to ban prop betting – in an effort to ensure the integrity of their leagues.
