Georgia lawmakers revisit sports betting gambling legalization debate

Legislation

Despite years of discussion, efforts to pass betting legislation have consistently stalled during past legislative sessions in Georgia.

Sports wagering is backed by Georgia’s professional sports teams, business groups and Republican Lt. Gov Burt Jones. But those powerful proponents have struggled to pass a law in the seven legislative sessions since the U.S. Supreme Court in 2018 struck down a federal law that banned commercial sports betting in most states.

If sports betting goes to the ballot, a survey from the University of Georgia found that 63% of voters favor the legalization. GeoComply found a 101% year-over-year increase in accounts trying to access legal sportsbooks from within Georgia during the 2024 NFL season.
