Norsk Tipping publishes report following lottery draw errors

Operator News

On behalf of Norsk Tipping’s board, the auditing firm PwC has reviewed and evaluated the internal controls for the largest lottery products, Lotto, Vikinglotto and Eurojackpot. PwC has conducted interviews, workshops and analyses, and has delivered a thorough report, which has now been finalized by the board.

Norsk Tipping recently received a fine from the Norwegian Lottery Authority and a lot of negative attention.

The report explains important findings and recommends measures. The most important findings are: There has been too much focus on innovation and new development at the expense of quality and control. There has been unclear management and division of responsibilities. There has been too little follow-up of suppliers. With the exception of information that must be protected for competition, security or privacy reasons, the reports are now being made public.

The report is important for gaining further knowledge about why Norsk Tipping has experienced a number of errors with its lottery games. There have been errors in the winning chances for the Norwegian additional prize in Eurojackpot, incorrect prize notifications and lack of participation in the Super Draw. For several of the incidents, Norsk Tipping has received a fine from the Norwegian Lottery Authority and a lot of negative attention.

PwC points out that Norsk Tipping has a comprehensive control regime, but that there are weaknesses. This includes the balance between innovation and safe operation, clarity of roles and responsibilities, follow-up of suppliers and systematic follow-up of deviations. The company’s long periods with few serious errors may have led to innovation and speed being prioritized over maintenance and internal control, writes PwC.

We take the report very seriously, and it is important to once again apologize to our customers who have been affected by all the errors. Although much works with us, it shows that we have had too many vulnerabilities. We are cleaning up. Every stone must be turned over to ensure that we both learn from the errors and build a new and better Norsk Tipping, says acting CEO, Vegar Strand.

Norsk Tipping is in the process of implementing measures to follow up on all of PwC’s recommendations
