Veikkaus under investigation for allegedly running illegal poker promotion

Regulation

Veikkaus, Finland’s state-owned gambling monopoly, has been buying visibility on social media for posts about its casino and slot-machine games, as well as information on gambling venues, according to Pokerit magazine.

Asked how much promotion it had purchased and on which platforms, Veikkaus told the Finnish News Agency STT by email that the paid visibility was limited to Meta’s channels, used sparingly and mainly to highlight major poker tournaments.

The company denied violating Finland’s lottery law.

The National Police Board told STT that sharing information about gambling locations is permitted, and that buying visibility is not necessarily considered marketing. The authority, however, said it intends to examine the matter further.

Finland’s gambling system is set for an overhaul in 2027, when online betting will shift to a licensing model, effectively ending Veikkaus’ monopoly.
