Illinois reports record wagering revenue in October
Illinois sportsbooks accepted $1.604 billion in combined retail and online wagers during October 2025, marking the highest monthly betting handle recorded in the state this year.
The month produced $203.6 million in adjusted gross revenue (AGR), a 12.69% hold rate, and $42.9 million in state tax revenue, according to state-reported figures.
While October’s handle set a new state benchmark, tax revenue ranked below several prior peak months, reflecting how hold percentage and promotional deductions continue to shape state collections even as total wagering volume grows.
In 2025, the Prairie State raked in $27.8 million from taxes on sports wagering, and in 2024 the state collected $37.3 million. In 2021, Illinois garnered less than $6 million in taxes from sports wagering.
The biggest gains in the tax amounts collected in the last five years were seen in online bets. Taxes collected from in-person wages in that time period remained relatively stagnant, hovering around $400,000 annually.
Part of the state’s revenue bill for the fiscal year included a tax of 25 cents per wager for a sports betting licensee’s first 20 million wagers accepted, and 50 cents per wager after that.
