Assembly votes to legalise online sports betting in Wisconsin
A bipartisan bill to legalise online sports betting in Wisconsin sailed through the Assembly in what was likely the chamber’s final day in session this year, though its future beyond Thursday’s vote is unclear.
The bill passed on a voice vote with a handful of objections. Lawmakers did not debate the proposal on the floor.
Originally scheduled for a vote in November, the proposal stalled after some Republicans raised concerns about its constitutionality and the possibility of granting tribes an “unfair monopoly” on the industry.
Assembly Majority Leader Tyler August, R-Walworth, one of the bill’s authors, told reporters last week he was still working through some of those concerns but was confident it would make its way out of the Assembly.
Democratic Gov. Tony Evers is likely to sign the bill into law if it makes it to his desk, but it’s unclear if the legislation will first pass the Senate.
