NBA players head back to court in gambling scandal
Chauncey Billups and Terry Rozier are scheduled to appear in federal court this week in Brooklyn, joining over 30 others indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice for updates on their ongoing cases.
Billups, a distinguished member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, alongside Rozier, a guard for the Miami Heat, has experienced a gradual progression toward trial as their legal teams negotiate various filings and handle discovery with federal prosecutors.
Both players were charged and arrested in October as part of a significant gambling scandal characterized by allegations of rigged poker games and the unauthorized exchange of confidential information regarding the health and availability of NBA players.
They have both entered not guilty pleas, along with the other 30 individuals facing charges, including former NBA player Damon Jones, who is also anticipated to attend court this week. Billups, who has been placed on indefinite leave from his role as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers by the NBA, has not made a court appearance since November. He faces accusations related to participating in rigged poker games, wherein prosecutors allege he was one of several former professional athletes involved in enticing potential victims to these tables.
