Massachusetts opens sports betting licensing process
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has voted to restart the application process for online sports betting licenses, creating an opportunity for additional operators to join the state’s regulated market.
The unanimous decision signals a new phase of expansion, with several untapped licenses still available. Massachusetts currently has multiple “untethered” mobile sportsbook licenses available, allowing operators to apply independently without forming partnerships with local casinos or racetracks.
This structure reduces the financial and logistical barriers typically associated with entering a regulated betting market. Without the need for revenue-sharing agreements or partnership negotiations, operators can launch more directly.
As a result, these licenses are expected to attract considerable interest from major sportsbook brands looking to expand their footprint.
The Massachusetts online betting market already includes several prominent operators, such as BetMGM, DraftKings, FanDuel, Caesars, Fanatics, theScore Bet, and Bally Bet.
However, the reopening of licensing means that new competitors could soon join this group. Additional entrants would increase pressure on existing sportsbooks, particularly in areas like pricing, product features, and promotional offerings.
With only a limited number of licenses available, competition among applicants is expected to be strong.
