Apple updates App Store for betting apps in Brazil

Regulation

Apple has taken a significant step by officially allowing the distribution of fixed-odds betting apps in Brazil, a change that came into effect on May 8th.

This new directive mandates that operators possess a valid license from the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting of the Ministry of Finance (SPA-MF), a requirement stemming from recent updates in Brazilian regulations regarding fixed-odds betting.

This development is the result of strong advocacy from the regulated sports betting and iGaming sectors in Brazil. The push for this change intensified following progress in regulatory measures and the initiation of official operations by licensed betting operators.

Previously, the iOS ecosystem had enforced stricter rules for betting applications in Brazil, causing many operators to focus on mobile web platforms and Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) rather than native app development. With this policy shift, Apple has now acknowledged the Brazilian regulatory landscape as conducive for the distribution of betting apps in the national App Store.
