Brendan Sorsby ends eligibility saga with NFL move after gambling scandal

Brendan Sorsby arrived at Texas Tech as a quarterback who could reshape the Red Raiders’ season. He leaves before ever playing a snap, with his college career swallowed by a gambling scandal.

Sorsby is expected to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft, ending his attempt to play for Texas Tech in 2026. His attorneys are expected to withdraw the eligibility lawsuit that temporarily gave him a path back onto the field, which would restore his NCAA ineligible status and allow him to seek entry into the NFL process.

The decision marks a dramatic turn after Sorsby had won a temporary injunction against the NCAA. That ruling would have allowed him to play for Texas Tech after serving a two-game suspension, despite the NCAA’s decision to bar him over gambling violations.

The quarterback had admitted to a gambling addiction that began during his freshman year at Indiana in 2022. Reports have said he placed more than 9,000 bets totaling over $90,000, including at least 40 involving Indiana while he was part of the program.

“I am grateful for the support from my family, my Tech coaching staff, teammates and community, and so many others who have encouraged me to address and learn more about this important issue,” Sorsby said in a statement.

“As my journey continues, I remain fully committed to and focused on being the best I can be both on and off the field.”
