Iowa sports betting hits $182 million in July

Iowa sports betting saw significant action in July 2026, with bettors placing a staggering $182.9 million in wagers. This represents a 24.7% increase from the $146.7 million spent the previous year, setting a new record for the month.

Sportsbooks reported earnings of nearly $18 million at a hold of 9.82%. This figure remains consistent with last July’s revenues, despite a lower win percentage for the sportsbooks. Additionally, the state benefited from $1.2 million in tax revenue at the 6.75% rate. Typically, July is one of the quieter months in sports betting, mainly featuring baseball games.

However, the knockout rounds of the World Cup and its climactic final on July 19 provided some extra excitement. Still, the impressive year-over-year growth hints at a more expansive market that is thriving beyond any single event.

These insights are sourced from the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission. While both Julys generated nearly identical revenue figures of $18 million, they reached that threshold through distinct paths. Last year, Iowa’s sportsbooks experienced a robust hold of 12.27% on a smaller handle. This year, the hold dipped to 9.82%, yet bettors contributed an additional $36 million, resulting in equivalent revenue. This trend points to healthier market dynamics.

High holds on stagnant volumes indicate that sportsbooks are squeezing their existing clientele, while lower holds on increasing wagering volumes suggest growth. Iowa’s July reflects this second scenario, showcasing a steady upward trajectory throughout the year.

Even with a strong June, July’s handle came in slightly lower—a typical seasonal fluctuation—yet the year-over-year comparison is crucial and compelling. It’s worth noting the World Cup’s impact.

The tournament’s knockout rounds unfolded during the early part of July, culminating in the final on July 19, drawing genuine soccer betting interest. However, the keys to the tournament success were largely established in June, particularly during the group stage, which ended before July and significantly boosted handles nationwide.

For context, June’s figures reveal a handle of $185.4 million—almost identical to July’s—and a hold of 8.85% as favorites performed well. By July, the hold rebounded to 9.82%, as the knockout phase introduced unpredictable results that disrupted high-favored parlays.

Although the tournament certainly influenced the month’s figures, the remarkable 24.7% increase in year-over-year handle signals that Iowa’s sports betting market is simply larger and more vibrant than it was a year ago. DraftKings, through Crown IA Gaming, led the online market with $70.9 million in handle, accounting for 40.9% of the total.

FanDuel, operating on the Betfair Interactive license, followed closely with $44.2 million. Together, they captured a commanding 66.4% share of all online wagering, a consistent trend throughout the year. In terms of profitability, FanDuel had the edge this month.

Despite handling $26.7 million less than DraftKings, it managed to retain $5.03 million, compared to DraftKings’ $6.28 million, thanks to its higher hold of 11.39% versus DraftKings’ 8.86%. Simply put, FanDuel secured greater winnings per dollar, while DraftKings led in overall volume.
