Washington, D.C.’s sports betting market generated $67.2 million in May down 10%, producing $8,818,009.73 in gross gaming revenue (GGR) at a 11.58% hold, and $2,080,222.94 in tax revenue.

The month reinforces what has become the defining feature of the District’s post-2024 market: a mobile-led ecosystem with a small number of national brands controlling most wagering volume, while venue and small-vendor retail contributes only a thin slice of overall handle.

Washington, D.C. runs one of the most unusual sports betting markets in the U.S., combining a city-run lottery platform with a handful of private operators tied to sports venues.

The D.C. Lottery oversees the system and publishes official monthly reports on handle, GGR, and tax contributions. Operators on the lottery platform are taxed at 40% of gross gaming revenue, while private operators pay 20% of GGR, creating a split model that sets D.C. apart from the states.
