Indiana reports $428 million in May sports handle

Sports Betting

In May 2026, Indiana sportsbooks reported a total of $428,197,307 in wagers, reflecting a modest decline of 1.17% compared to the previous year.

However, there was a notable increase in gross gaming revenue, which surged by 14.79% to reach $50,254,087. This uptick was primarily driven by a rebound in the statewide hold, which improved to 11.74%, up from 10.10%.

The state benefited from this growth, collecting $4,774,138 in tax revenue, also representing a 14.79% increase under the 9.5% tax rate. The dynamics of flat handle versus rising revenue tell a compelling story for the month, while the sports betting landscape is increasingly leaning towards soccer as the World Cup approaches.

These insights are derived from the Indiana Gaming Commission. In May, football saw a significant reduction, with wagers totaling only $5.8 million, accounting for a mere 1.4% of the month’s handle. This drop is expected as the NFL Draft has concluded and the upcoming season still looms. As a result, other sports picked up the slack.

Baseball experienced a remarkable surge, more than doubling its share to 16% as the MLB season gains momentum. Meanwhile, basketball remained steady at 22%, buoyed by the excitement of the NBA and college postseason tournaments.
