Washington sports wagers top $65 million in July
In July 2026, sportsbooks in Washington DC recorded a remarkable $65 million in handling, marking a 14.7% increase from the $55.9 million reported during the same month the previous year. This activity generated $6,132,928 in gross gaming revenue, translating to a hold of 9.56%.
The District reaped $1,457,718 in tax revenue, reflecting an effective rate of 23.8% on the total revenue. An interesting aspect of DC’s sports betting landscape is the lack of a uniform tax rate. Instead, the District employs three different rates that range from 10% to 30%.
The applicable rate for each operator is determined by the class of license held rather than the volume of revenue generated. This data is sourced from the DC Office of Lottery and Gaming. This tax structure is quite different from what most jurisdictions implement. DC opts to base its tax rates on the level of physical investment, rather than scaling them according to revenue.
For instance, a sportsbook associated with a local neighborhood business is taxed at 10%. In contrast, one located at a major venue like Capital One Arena, Nationals Park, or Audi Field incurs a 20% tax rate. Meanwhile, operators without any local presence, such as app-based sportsbooks, face a hefty 30% rate. In this context, FanDuel reported $3.12 million in revenue, culminating in a tax payment of $624,742. DraftKings, generating $1.76 million, 44% less than FanDuel, paid $528,342 in taxes, which is only 16% lower.
