Betclic boss warns against tax hikes which could ‘destroy industry’

As organised by the PLFSS, the taxation of gambling will destroy the legal market and remove all viability from its players, while other solutions existed, deplores Nicolas Béraud, the president of their professional association and Betclic Group.

The joint committee, responsible for finalizing the draft budget, proposes an increase in taxes on online gambling. An increase of 4% for sports betting, plus 10% for poker, which brings the tax to 70 and 50% of the revenues of private operators. But what would the consequences be?

Private online gaming operators are worried. As part of the 2025 Budget project, the joint committee has proposed increasing taxes on online gambling, between 4 and 10% depending on the different games. Increases that are added to already very high taxes, which worries operators, as Nicolas Béraud,, explains.

“It’s a real explosion. It will call into question our economic model because we were already at a very high tax level. Today, 90 to 95% of profits go to the State”. A new increase in taxes raises fears of a drop in activity for online gaming services, perhaps even worse: “The massive increase envisaged would no longer allow for sustainable activity.

Another consequence feared by Nicolas Béraud is the rise of illegal gambling: “It will spread and, probably, in sports betting. Because illegal gambling has zero constraints and we will have a much more attractive offer.” If such a thing happens, in addition to having consequences for gambling operators, it could also affect the entire sports world in France:

“Today, all online operators invest in leagues, federations and clubs to the tune of 50 million euros per year. And clearly, we will have to make so many savings to be able to survive that it will no longer be possible, unfortunately, to invest in sport.”
